Disappointed -- and somewhat bitter -- with Smoke Comics

I realize the FAQ requests not complaining about comic frequency, but there's a little more to this than just a simple complaint about the frequency. Also, this complaint is about Smoke, rather than WTF which, while slow, progresses at a reasonable pace and I'm glad that Jeremy gets enough out of this to keep up.

That said, I'm disappointed. Two years ago when Smoke Comics went up, there was a message that said that new Smoke pages would be put up about one per month. At the time, he put up #5 and #6. Today we're up to #14; that's 8 comics in 24 months.

Worse than that, though, was the message that if we donated, we'd get copies of those comics sent to us. Unfortunately, a year I made the error of donating, and got only silence for the money I sent along. I've not been wanting to make waves or cause trouble about this, but I keep checking Smoke, and I keep coming away disappointed. I like the story, and I was interested enough in where it's going to donate well more than the cost of a couple of comic books to see where it was going.

Emails sent to Jeremy to ask for an explanation have gone nowhere. Now, this is a donation, not a purchase, so on one hand I understand there's no real obligation for me to get anything for my donation. On the other hand, with emails to Jeremy going unanswered, and my $50 going down a black hole, I'm feeling at a loss for what to do. At the very least I feel like other people should be warned. I haven't seen any complaints of that nature on the boards...but I have suspicions that it's not because the complaints haven't been made, but because they're deleted. If they are, well, then my only outlet will have been taken away.

I'd like to believe that this is a simple mistake, and it can be corrected, and that maybe my emails are getting lost in what is probably a lot of email to Jeremy. And that maybe he just forgot, or whatever. If that's the case, this also is my only way of reaching him. Thus, I feel compelled to post.

But even with that, he did say he'd post one a month, and 1 every 3 is a far, far cry from that. Especially when he held out the promise of getting more in return for donations.

I feel bad making one; I don't really want to complain, but he doesn't answer my emails.

hey, at least you aren't going 'OMG WTF YOU SUXX0RZ' or something. I'm sure your maturity in approaching this matter is appreciated by vexy and JW. Good for you! Smile

Most of the emails people are sending to Jeremy are actually going to me. I tell folks, look.. I'll pass the info along and see what I can accomplish. I'm sorry if I missed your messages.

At this point, I can tell you that it's being worked on and Jeremy apologizes for the severe lapse in the donation packages that should have gone out long ago. It's in the works, amends will be made, and we (both Jer and I) are hoping not to have such a lapse again.

Thanks, Vexa! If you need more info, PM me or email me and I can get paypal receipts or whatnot. It's actually been a very long time, I've tried to be patient but figured by now it's totally off the radar.

MerlinOfChaos,

I guess you know now that complaints voiced in a mature, reasonable manner are not deleted.

The only censorship practiced on this board is for posts which violate the terms of use which everyone agrees to when joining.

That said, you are absolutely correct that a donation is just that - a no strings attached, free will offering.

The material which he has created and posted is there for all to enjoy. Donating is not required. Donors should receive the additional material he promised, and AFAIK, every case brought to his attention has been corrected.

As far as receiving the Smoke Comics in advance of them being posted for public viewing, the only comment I can find in his posted remarks regarding this is from the main page of the website:

Please keep in mind the Wallpapers are a thank you gift for your generous donation, not a product you’re purchasing. Donations for all Wallpapers at once take the longest to be sent as I have to go through the records manually looking for donations of $50 or above.

Also just to be clear regular monthly donations receive that months Wallpaper and 2 Comics or you can request a specific wallpaper and/or 2 comics via email.

Jer doesn't always make his meaning perfectly clear when he writes sentences, but I think from what I can read that a one time donation of $50 or more will get you all the wallpapers and the next 2 Smoke comics which have not been publicly posted yet.

Regular monthly donations should receive the wallpaper for that month and the next 2 Smoke comics which have not been posted for public viewing.

From what I read in your post which started this thread, you made a 1 time donation of $50.

That in no way could be construed as entitling you to receive future wallpapers and new Smoke strips on an ongoing basis. If you did not receive any wallpapers, or the next 2 Smoke comics at the time you donated - then you are definitely entitled to those, no question about it.

Is that an accurate assessment of the situation?

If so, I would have no problem contacting him personally and instructing him to make sure you receive everything your 1 time donation of $50 entitles you to, according to anything he may have posted regarding donations.

I never received anything; not the wallpapers, a comic, or even a thank you.

Straight from the 'Bonus' page accessed by clicking the link on the main website.

---

Can I Donate for all previous Wallpapers and Smoke Comics at once?

Any donation I see of fifty dollars or more now receives all wallpapers up to current and all the Smoke comics made up to that point. Please ensure you have a good amount of free space in your inbox and they will be mailed as soon as possible. Keep in mind that donations for everything take the most time to process so it may be awhile, but I most definitely will send everything out to you.

---

Some of the Bonus page is outdated/inaccurate (...I think?) but this is what it says. Razz

Also Merlin, curse you for not being some "OMFGWTFASSSHOLEZ" kinda of person. That kind of drama is tasty. Wink

Merlin, I'll be sure to double up on Vex's efforts and make sure you get the gifts you're entitled to - and thank you very much for taking the time to donate to Jer. I'm sorry you didn't receive them in a timely manner, as you can see from the things he has posted on the subject he sometimes has difficulty sorting thru the donations to find the ones which need prompt response.

I've also noticed updates slow down quite a bit both on Smoke and WTF, Started reading WTF while playing everquest 3 or 4 years ago and got hooked on the characters and the storyline. Been following it even since quitting EQ! This year has seen so few updates i think i counted 10?
like issues 317-327 since december last year.

Now this may sound like a complaint but its just curiousity. I'm just wondering why we've seen such slow down in the release of issues. I understand that things change in peoples personal lifes or change financially, anyone who's played a MMO long enough has seen that happen. Just posting here to see if there is more Information on why this is. I didn't see anything on the front page and just now started browsing the forums so i may of missed something.

So if anyone can fill me in or point me to the right place, I'd appreciate it =P

Well, it could be that Life is demanding more time from our Favorite Artist for other things that need his attention. Real Life always must come first.

Mr. Waller may have a lot on his plate at the moment, but we're never disappointed.

Same happened here, I donated in February if i recall correctly, and knowing that it might take some time I went on holidays and stuff and only checked back in in April - nothing till then.
Well, I asked via email in may, and this weekend I finally got an email from Vex explaining that they actually did receive the money Smile

A "Thank you" message would have been great or even a "read" message.

Well I thought about having Jeremy designing me a sig or 2 perhaps, but if it's so hard to get into contact with him, I might have to rely on other and maybe not so talented designers...
I know that real life can be a pain in the ass (actually that was mainly the reason why I forgot to check on the stuff from feb to april), but a message would have been great.

Anyway now that I know that the money actually did go there and I did get a message that the donation reward is beeing worked on I am in good spirits to find it in my inbox as soon as I come back from my next trip. Smile

Its a shame to see other people have also donated with not so much as a thank you. I donated back in October 2007 and have never heard anything of it. Im not really concerned as its not as much as others in this thread, but even setting something automatic with paypal to send a thankyou would be a good idea.

I am disappointed in the frequency of Smoke comics but such is life. I cannot afford to donate as I am still paying off my wifes last 3 years in collage and our trip to Italy which was 95% sponsored by my mom who took the whole family there (7 of us)... I was really happy to come home from Italy to a new set of comics regardless, Thank you very much. I only ask you do your best and enjoy doing it because we all enjoy what you do.

peace,
